Prince Edward Island is one of our family’s favourite places in the world. We first visited when our older daughter was a toddler more than 20 years ago and have enjoyed a total of 10 vacations on the island – so far!
Prince Edward Island is a fun, relaxing destination with plenty to do to fill a week-long vacation. Summer months are very busy on the island so it’s a good idea to plan ahead and decide where to stay and whether you want to stay in one place for the duration of your visit or move around (we have done both and it’s really a personal preference depending on your vacation style).
Once you have chosen and booked your accommodation then you can start planning your itinerary for the perfect PEI vacation!
These are our 4 favourite places to stay on a visit to Prince Edward Island – the Holman Grand Hotel in Charlottetown, Dalvay by the Sea in Prince Edward Island National Park, Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages in Cavendish and West Point Lighthouse Inn on the North Cape Coastal route.

The Holman Grand Hotel
123 Grafton Street, Charlottetown
Located in the heart of downtown Charlottetown, The Holman Grand Hotel is a great choice for visitors who plan to stay in the provincial capital for part of their PEI vacation.
We stayed here for a couple of nights with our daughters and older daughter’s friend on a high school graduation trip before moving on to Cavendish. The location was perfect for sightseeing around the city and for attending the theatre – plus there’s a Cows Ice Cream close by!

The Holman Grand is a modern boutique hotel with 80 guest rooms and suites located across the street from the Confederation Centre for the Arts. The accommodations are elegant and the hotel has all the amenities that you would expect in a city hotel including an on-site spa. We enjoyed a pre-theatre dinner at the 0n-site restaurant Redwater Rustic Grille which provides an upscale dining experience highlighting PEI’s fresh produce, seafood and beef.
Who should stay here? Perfect for solo travel, a couples getaway or families who want to explore the city for a day or two but don’t want to daytrip. My personal preference when travelling with young kids is to stay close to the beach and drive into Charlottetown to spend a day.

Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages
46 Memory Lane, Cavendish
We have vacationed on Prince Edward Island 10 times and have stayed at Kindred Spirits Inn & Cottages in Cavendish for at least part of each one of those trips. We first chose Kindred Spirits in 1998 when we were looking for family-friendly Cavendish accommodations and our daughters loved it so much that we returned each time we travelled to the island. My husband and I recently stayed in the inn on a couples getaway and discovered that the property is great for couples or solo travellers as well.

Located in the Cavendish tourist region next door to Green Gables, Kindred Spirits is near the beach and all of the restaurants and family-friendly attractions that Cavendish is known for. There are two and three bedroom modern self-catering cottages spaced out around the 6.5 acre property and rooms and suites available in the quaint country-style Inn and Gatehouse. Breakfast is included for guests staying in the Inn and Gatehouse.
Amenities include an outdoor heated swimming pool and jacuzzi, playground, coin-operated laundry facilities, fitness room, and bike rentals. Kindred Spirits is a special place because it’s family owned and operated by the James family since 1986 – all the years that we visited with our kids, it truly felt like a home away from home.
Who should stay here? The cottages are perfect for families – we have stayed here 9 times with kids ranging in ages from toddler to teenager and wouldn’t stay anywhere else. The lovely inn is also a great choice for a couples getaway or solo traveller.

West Point Lighthouse Inn
364 Cedar Dunes Park Road, West Point
Staying at the West Point Lighthouse Inn had been on my bucket list of Canadian hotels for some time before my husband and I were able to stay on a couples trip to Prince Edward Island. Located on the North Cape Coastal Drive, West Point Lighthouse was built in 1875 and the inn is Canada’s first in an active lighthouse. The 4-star inn is located on a beautiful stretch of sandy beach and the sunsets over the Northumberland Strait are breathtaking!

The inn features 11 contemporary rooms which offer gorgeous views of the Northumberland Strait and walkout decks as well as two rooms located in the actual tower of the historic lighthouse in a private guests-only section. My husband and I stayed here on our Prince Edward Island couple’s getaway in the Tower Room which is located in the lighthouse as is the Keepers Quarters room. I had read that our Tower Room was haunted but, alas, no ghosts appeared during our stay!
Amenities include free laundry facilities for guests after 5 pm, free Wi-Fi, a BBQ and fire pit, free access to the lighthouse museum and a continental breakfast free for guests. There is no restaurant at the inn and not much close by so it’s a good idea to eat before arriving for the evening and bring snacks if you have nighttime munchers!
Who should stay here? Anyone who wants to sleep in a lighthouse! The Tower Room is only suitable for a couple as it has only one bed but the Keeper’s Quarters and some of the contemporary seaside rooms have two beds so could accommodate a small family.

Dalvay by the Sea
Another bucket list hotel experience for me was staying in Dalvay by the Sea which is located within Prince Edward Island National Park. The elegant Victorian inn, built in 1895, has been operated as a country resort since the 1930s and is now a National Historic Site of Canada. If you’re a fan of Anne of Green Gables then you may recognize Dalvay by the Sea as the fictional White Sands Hotel from the Anne of Green Gables movies and from the television show Road to Avonlea.
Dalvay by the Sea has 25 unique guest rooms furnished with period antiques available in the inn and also eight 3-bedroom cottages located adjacent to the inn. The charming inn has a full-service restaurant which offers a relaxed fine dining experience featuring the island’s many fresh and local offerings and there is also a spa on-site.
For years we had a family tradition of dining here on our last night on the island but had never stayed on site until a recent couples getaway on the island. I was thrilled to finally have an opportunity to spend the night in one of the guest rooms of the main inn which is considered one of Canada’s most romantic places – it was as lovely as I had imagined!
Who should stay here? The inn is great for couples or solo travellers and the cottages are ideal for families.

I’d highly recommend the Inn of Bay Fortune too. The food is also memorable.

We had hoped to stay there on our last trip but they had no vacancy for our dates so we chose a nearby inn instead and regretted it. Hopefully we can stay at the Inn of Bay Fortune the next time we’re on the island!
