A review of Frommer’s Far & Wide: A Weekly Guide to Canada’s Best Travel Experiences.
Like many people, January is my least favourite month of the year. It’s cold, it’s long and it’s dreary. As soon as the 1st of February rolls around, however, I feel like I’m over the hump. Spring is on the way and I can start dreaming about and planning the year’s vacations.
For February’s Book of the Month I have selected a book that’s perfect for both dreaming and planning – Frommer’s Far & Wide: A Weekly Guide to Canada’s Best Travel Experiences.
This guide reminded me a bit of a post that I wrote for Travel Mamas called Canada For All Seasons which outlined one of my favourite Canadian destinations for each of the four seasons. Frommer’s goes a step further in recommending a top Canadian travel experience for each week of the year.
Each week also includes a suggestion for an experience in the following categories: Adventure; Culture & History; Nature’s Grandeur; Events & Festivals; Quirky Canada; and Relaxation and Rejuvenation.
As an example, the recommended trip for the first week of February is Le Carnaval de Québec which runs this year from January 27th – February 12th. Other suggestions include Gliding along the Bruce Trail on Cross-Country Skis (Adventure); Seeing a Performance by Canada’s Largest Opera Company (Culture/History); Walking the World’s Climate Zones at the Montréal Biodôme (Nature); Taking in the Yukon Quest Race (Events & Festivals); Looking for signs of an Early Spring in Wiarton (Quirky); and Tasting the Ultimate Valentine’s Chocolate (Rejuvenate).
The book is packed with ideas for Canadian holidays from one end of the country to the other and is great both for finding destinations that may be ideal for a certain time of the year and also for learning more about what Canada has to offer.
It also includes entries by some well-known Canadian personalities on their favourite places in Canada as well as information about important events in Canadian history. It’s definitely worth reading if you are looking for some Canadian travel inspiration although it may take more than one lifetime to check off all these experiences.
