Review of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith
I have been reading the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith since the first installment was published back in 1998. This charming series is set in Gaborone, Botswana and chronicles the adventures of lady detective Precious Ramotswe, her erstwhile assistant, Grace Makutsi and an assortment of other characters who are part of their lives and community.
I am currently reading the most recent novel, “The Saturday Big Tent Wedding Party” which is the twelfth book in the series. I love spending time with Mma Ramotswe as she helps others deal with problems big and small. She has to be one of the most likeable characters in modern fiction as she goes through her days dispensing kindness and everyday wisdom and doing her best to uphold the traditional values of her beloved Botswana.
As I read along, I find myself dreaming about some day going to Africa and having a nice chat with Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi over a cup of steaming bush tea.
I would definitely recommend this series to anyone looking for a pleasant read that transports you to a far away place.
