Instagram Travel Thursday – my favourite Instagram photos from a recent trip to Manitoulin Island.
I have only just started on Instagram in the past week but I’m loving it thus far! I hesitated to start because I thought that it was just going to be one more social media site to have to keep on top of of but it’s so easy and so much fun for anyone who is as addicted to taking photos and looking at other people’s photos as I am.
We spent this past weekend and the beginning of the week on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario so I’m sharing a few of my favourite Manitoulin Instagram photos for Instagram Travel Thursday this week.
Manitoulin Island is located in the north channel of Lake Huron on the Canadian side and is the world’s largest freshwater island. My husband’s parents grew up on the island so we visit every summer at least once.
The island can be accessed by either car or ferry – we were driving so we arrived via the Little Current swing bridge which swings on the hour to let boat traffic through during the summer months. Crossing the bridge always feels like arriving home even though the cottage and the village of Kagawong are still some distance down the road.
We stay in the village of Kagawong and I love the small harbour area here – particularly this lighthouse.
Kagawong is a popular village with summer tourists who arrive to see Bridal Veil Falls. Most people park near the falls and walk down a set of metal stairs to see it but we hiked through the woods along Kagawong River to get there.
Bridal Veil Falls is definitely worth the hike.
After hiking, a visit to the marina in Kagawong for a refreshing ice cream cone is mandatory, I think.
Near the marina is St. John the Evangelist, a nautical-themed church with this gorgeious stained-glass window.
The best part about visiting the cottage though is probably the change of pace from our busy lives in the city – sometimes there is nothing better than just relaxing on the dock.
Playing on the beach is fun too!
Before we know it, a few days have passed and we are crossing the bridge to the mainland as we leave the island and start the long drive home.

I’m so glad you’re on Instagram, but it’s not fair that you have such great shots and you’re still a newbie. π
Love those waterfalls.
Reeta @houseofanais
Looks fantastic – very much like my home country Finland. I’ve only been to Canada once and would love to see more of its nature!

Thank you, Andrea!!

Aw thanks, Ann! Bridal Veil is beautiful – people come from all over to see the falls!
Lisa Goodmurphy
Thanks, Reeta! I have only been to Helsinki but I think that there are many similarities between the two countries – I’d like to see more of Finland so that I can test my theory!

Thank you so much for linking up with us this week. I think you are going to love Instagram. It’s the only social media tool that I truly keep up with while traveling. You have a beautiful family, and that island looks so quaint.

I’m so glad you joined Instagram Lisa! You are constantly travelling and I am vicariously through you π
Manitoulin Island is a stunning place and definitely somewhere I want to visit one day with my husband and kids. Just have to figure out how they are going to survive the roadtrip from Toronto. My daughter (5) is quite antsy on roadtrips more than 3 hours long! We may have to wait a few years.

I was on instagram for a while but kind of fell off of it, but I have to admit, I do still love seeing people’s photos! You got some great shots and it looks like you have a lot of fun. We had a mountain cabin when I was a kid and I remember just how much fun it was spending time there.

I just love it all, Jan – it’s such a respite from our busy lives when we just head there to relax for a few days!!
Lisa Goodmurphy
Thanks, Tina – that’s why I love the island so much!!

Thanks, Lisa! I’ve only had Instagram for a few days but I must admit that it is a lot of fun!!
Lisa Goodmurphy
Thank you! It does seem like Instagram will be very easy to use on the go!

Thanks, Cheryl! I think that your family would really enjoy Manitoulin! If your daughter gets antsy in the car then you might prefer to take the ferry from Tobermory to South Baymouth. We found that the ferry doesn’t save any time in getting there but it does give you 2 hours when you can be free to walk around onboard rather than being stuck in the car.

Thanks, Jenn! My kids have always loved going to the cottage – I think they appreciate that they can have much more freedom there than they do in the city! That and all the fresh air!!
