Kindred Spirits County Inn and Cottages, a family-owned and operated resort in the Cavendish area, is our family’s home-away-from-home when we vacation on Prince Edward Island.
The first time that we traveled to Prince Edward Island, our older daughter was not yet 2 years old and we were looking for a family-friendly resort to stay for a week. I read through the PEI Visitor’s Guide (as I wasn’t yet using the internet much in 1998) and chose Kindred Spirits Country Inn & Cottages in Cavendish. We were so pleased with our stay that we decided to book a cottage for the following summer before we left for home.

That was the first of many family trips to Prince Edward Island (10 at last count!) and Kindred Spirits has become our home away from home – my daughters wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else.
The Inn is a lovely Victorian style country home located in the heart of the Cavendish resort area right next door to the Anne of Green Gables house and the Green Gables Golf Course. The resort is family-owned and operated which means that there is a personal touch to everything. When we first started visiting Kindred Spirits, the owners’ children were teenagers (leading campfire sing-alongs) and now they are involved in running the family business as well.
Accommodations at Kindred Spirits
Kindred Spirits offers a range of accommodations including various types of rooms in the inn and gatehouse and a number of 2 and 3 bedroom cottages that circle the property. Until our most recent visit we always stayed in a 2-bedroom cottage which afforded us plenty of space and provided the girls with easy access to the central playground.
On our most recent trip, we decided to splurge and rent one of the more spacious and luxurious 3 bedroom cottages so that the girls could have their own bedrooms and we could have the extra room to spread out – and we loved it!! The cottage could have easily accommodated twice as many people but it was ever so nice not to be tripping over each other.
These cottages have a sunken living room at the back with a double sofa-bed, cable television with dvd player and a full kitchen.
Our cottage had a master bedroom with a king bed and ensuite bath, a second room with a Queen bed, and a third bedroom with a queen bed plus a single. The main bathroom included a jacuzzi.
We loved our sundeck at the rear of the cottage, particularly the hot tub. There’s also a barbeque – but we didn’t make use of it as we generally ate out for dinner.
Facilities at Kindred Spirits
The resort has a large heated swimming pool and hot tub, a fantastic playground for the kids, a coin-operated laundromat, games room, fitness room, and high-speed wireless internet. There is no restaurant on site but there are plenty of family-friendly restaurants nearby.
Some of our best memories of Kindred Spirits revolve around the campfires – roasting marshmallows and sing-alongs. They are held a couple of times a week but are dependent on the weather and Emma was devastated that we missed them this visit – once because we were in Charlottetown and the second one cancelled because of high winds. I had to promise her that we would return soon to make up for it!
Nearby Attractions
Cavendish Resort area is very popular with families and there is a wide range of activities and attractions nearby including Anne of Green Gables Heritage Place, the Village of Avonlea, amusement parks and the beautiful red sand beaches of Prince Edward Island National Park.
The Cavendish Boardwalk is just a few minutes drive from the resort and has casual dining, shopping and, most importantly, Cows Ice Cream. Just down the road, Cavendish Tourist Mart has a selection of groceries and other supplies for anyone who didn’t stock up before arriving in the resort area or for any last-minute needs.
The capital city of Charlottetown is only about a half hour drive away so it is easy to head there for a day of sightseeing and to take in Anne of Green Gables: The Musical at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

I have local friends that traveled to PEI and I’m positive they also stayed at Kindred Spirits. They loved the cottages!
I’ve not been to PEI but everytime I read one of your posts about the area, I want to plan a trip. The Anne of Green Gables series was my favorite when I was growing up and even my boys have an appreciation after I read “Rilla of Ingleside” to them as a read aloud when they were younger.

What a coincidence! It is a lovely place to stay and I recommend it to anyone who asks. 🙂 You should definitely plan a visit – my girls and I are huge Anne fans as a result of our visits to PEI – and that’s only a small part of why we love it so much!

You would love it, Katja – you should definitely plan a visit!

I’ve wanted to go to PEI for some time, so thanks for shedding some light on it. If only it wasn’t so far for us.
Lisa Goodmurphy
Oh, it’s not that far – particularly if you’re flying. We even see license plates from all over North America when we are there – so it’s worth the drive too! You should definitely plan to get there sometime.

Your cottage looks homey and just beautiful.
I’ve not been to PEI but it’s on my list.

Oh wow that cottage is super cute! Love it! I will have to put this on my travel list.
Mary {The World Is A Book}
What a great place and it looks so spacious, comfortable and really feel like someone’s home. Love all the amenities they offer. I admit I didn’t know too much about PEI until your posts. 🙂 I need to see the maritime provinces one of these days.
Becca@rwetheryetmom?
It looks gorgeous!! I would love to stay here.
Thanks so much for linking up this week!
Amy @ The Q Family
Looks like a great summer place for the family indeed. I love how clean it looks because sometimes the home rental available can be worst than it looks from the listing. 🙂 We are thinking about visiting Quebec this summer and this post helps add another stop to our trip. 🙂

You are right, what a perfect place to stay with kids! The whole Anne of Green Gables thing just makes it all seem so magical. I need to get to this part of Canada soon!
Lisa Goodmurphy
Thanks – I think the homey feel is what makes us love it so much! When you make it to PEI, you will fall in love – the island is perfect!

Thanks, Sere! I recommend PEI to everyone I know – you should definitely put it on your travel list!

You need to start planning a big Canada trip, Becca!! 🙂

Mary, I’m making it my personal mission to convince you to visit Atlantic Canada with your family!
Lisa Goodmurphy
Amy, I’m so glad that you’re bringing your family to Canada! You will love Québec and if you have the opportunity to stop in the Atlantic provinces as well you will have an amazing time! Let me know if you need any tips on Eastern Canada.
Lisa Goodmurphy
I think we would have fallen in love with PEI even without the Anne of Green Gables thing but the fact that my girls were gaga over her from a young age probably made it that much more fun to go back again and again!
Cheryl @ Kids On A Plane
Oh Lisa, I get the travel planning itch every time I read your posts about the East Coast.
PEI is just beautiful and the cottages being so close to Anne of Green Gables house, I have to visit sooner than later.
Lovely photos of the cottage (although it seems much bigger than what I would think of when I hear the word “cottage”).
Now to find a way to grow money on trees and get my family to PEI!
Lisa Goodmurphy
Cheryl, we decided to splurge on a larger cottage than we needed on the last trip so the teenager would have plenty of space! 🙂 The 2 bedroom cottages were much smaller but still lots big enough for a family with a master bedroom, a main bath, a second room with 2 beds and a cosy kitchen/living area. Unfortunately, I can’t find photos from any of those stays.
You would love PEI – it’s a great family-friendly destination and really easy with small kids.
Sonja
I always bookmark a charming B&B, and this one is precious. If we ever get around to visiting Canada your blog will be the one-stop spot for all my research!
Lisa Goodmurphy
Always happy to help you plan your trip to Canada, Sonja – Prince Edward Island would definitely be a good place to start!

Hi Lisa,
Great post! I work in media relations for Tourism PEI and I’m so happy to hear that you have fallen in love with the Island. I also love Kindred Spirits. My favorite part is turning off the main road and down the lane to the cottages. It feels so secretive and exclusive.
Hopefully we will see you back again this summer! Thanks for sharing!
Isabel

Isabel – I LOVE that laneway – I always feel like we have entered the world of Anne of Green Gables when we start down the lane – I can just imagine her description of it!
I love PEI so much that I would go back every year if we could – hopefully I don’t have to wait too long for my next return trip!
