Photos of painted moose in Talkeetna, Alaska
After disembarking from an Alaskan cruise in Whittier our family boarded an Alaska Railroad train to the historic village of Talkeetna where we were able to spend a couple of hours before continuing on to Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Talkeetna is a remote but bustling town with a stop on the railway line and the Talkeetna Ranger Station where Denali climbers have to check-in.

We were quite pleasantly surprised upon our arrival to find a parade of quirky painted moose around the streets of town. Emma was delighted with the moose and we had to stop and see them all.

Steve, we were there the end of June/beginning of July and it was surprisingly warm especially once we got into the interior.

@Sophie – The Alaskan cruise season runs from May through the end of September typically. We cruised from June 23rd to the 30th and then did a 5 day tour by land afterward. We would usually take our summer vacation later in the summer, however, I really wanted to be in Alaska as close as possible to the summer solstice so that we could experience “the land of the midnight sun”. I remember distinctly being in Fairbanks and turning on the weather network to see an overnight forecast of “sunny” which was really cool. The beginning and end of the cruise season is generally cooler. We lucked out and had fantastic weather on our Alaskan trip – lots of warm and sunny days. I think Alaska is a fantastic trip for kids.
