Review of Book Lust to Go by Nancy Pearl.
The Book of the Month for September is Book Lust To Go by Nancy Pearl. Ms. Pearl is described in her biography as “America’s rock star librarian” who lectures widely on books and reading and regularly recommends books on NPR. She has published other compilations of recommended books, however, this is her first to focus on literary globetrotting.
Ms. Pearl provides an alphabetical listing of her recommendations for the best fiction and non-fiction reading for more than 120 particular destinations. Chapters include “Canada, O Canada”, “Maine Tales”, “Roman Holiday” and “Peru(sing) Peru” just to name a few.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book!! I often tell people that I love to read, I love to travel, and I love to read about travel and this is my absolute dream guide to finding books about specific destinations. It is by no means comprehensive (and how could it possibly be) but it provides a wonderful reference list for a reader who wants to do some pre-trip reading or for armchair travelers who just want to read about an exotic destination.
I only wish that she would publish a list like this for children’s literature as I spend so much time searching for books that my children can read to get them excited about their travels. I definitely recommend picking up this book if you are looking for some interesting travel reading – it is a wonderful resource.
